Hi, I'm Ant Steep — composer, sound designer, electronic music performer, and educator.
For over 20 years, I've worked across the music industry helping artists deepen their creative voice through sound and technology. I've designed studios, consulted for composers and producers, and taught students from high school to college.
My specialty isn't chasing trends.
It's helping creators develop a sound that can't be mistaken for anyone else's.
This isn't a lack of talent.
It's a lack of tools and translation.
Presets are great for getting started. They're how most of us learned synthesis was even a thing. There's a ceiling though, and most people hit it without realizing.
Here's what tends to happen:
That's the wall. And it's not a talent wall. It's a translation wall. You can hear what you want, but you don't have the vocabulary or the mental model to build it.
Synthesis is the vocabulary.
This course gives you the skills and listening framework to design sounds from the ground up, translate ideas into audio with confidence, and take ownership of your creative process.
No endless preset scrolling.
No guesswork.
Just practical, musical knowledge that helps you shape sound with intention.
The goal isn't to sound like everyone else.
It's to sound unmistakably like you.
In an age where AI can generate infinite variations, the ability to intentionally design sound is becoming more valuable, not less.
This course isn't about competing with AI.
It's about developing a creative voice, taste, and decision-making process that can't be automated.
That's what makes your work stand out.
Structured to build on each other.
A short tour through the instruments and people that shaped how we make sound today.
Build your first subtractive patch from scratch in VCV Rack. The foundation everything else sits on.
Tone, weight, character. Three full bass patches built across VCV Rack and Vital.
Expressive sounds that respond to how you play them. Sounds that feel played, not programmed.
Atmospheric textures, layering, evolution. Three pad patches for ambient, cinematic, and electronic contexts.
Kicks, snares, hi-hats built from oscillators and noise. No samples.
Where recorded sound becomes a playable instrument. Hybrid workflows, multi-sampling.
Translating everything across Logic, Ableton, Cubase, and Bitwig.
A private 45–60 minute video session. Not a chatbot. Not a support ticket. An actual conversation.
Use it when something doesn't click. Bring me your patches. Talk through your workflow. Get unstuck on whatever's in your way. People have used theirs for everything from "explain this one module again" to "I'm stuck on a film cue and I don't know what's wrong" to "here's my career plan, tell me where the holes are."
The part of the course that nothing else online really offers.
"Ant Steep helped me unlock my potential and find my artistic voice. He has a great way of communicating complex topics in simple ways that help you focus on what's important. Great teacher!"Blake Envy
"Ant was my teacher at University and after I graduated he became my career coach and mentor. My career would not be possible without the influence of Ant's encyclopedic knowledge of Electronic Music culture and the technology that makes it. Highly recommend signing up to get access to his brain."Jasmine Orta · Techno Artist
"Most of my friends either picked cars or hifi equipment for their midlife crisis hobby. I picked modular synths despite not having any musical background. With no idea how to start, I came to Ant for help and under his guidance the cloud of mystery cleared. Because of Ant I have discovered a creative energy that is truly invigorating my life. He is a gentleman and a scholar."Franklin
Just VCV Rack and Vital — both completely free. The course also covers how synthesis applies across Logic, Ableton, Bitwig, and Cubase, so whatever DAW you're on, you're covered.
Depends on what "the basics" means. If you understand signal flow but still find yourself reaching for presets when you need a specific sound, yes — this course is built around developing the listening skills and instincts that make synthesis feel natural rather than technical. If you can build complex patches from scratch and explain why every knob is where it is, you've probably outgrown it.
Roughly 30 hours of video content, plus however long you spend actually building patches. Most students take 4–8 weeks at a comfortable pace. There's no time limit. You keep access for life.
Yes. Some people book it early to get pointed in the right direction. Others save it for the end. Some wait until they hit a wall on a real project. Whenever works for you.
Email me within 14 days and I'll refund you, no friction. I'd rather you not have a course you're not using.
